Nik Nerburn decolonizes the Paul Bunyan folk myth, connects it to the violent history of Minnesota, and provides possible counter histories. A fascinating and playful forty-minute long experimental documentary.

"In the Shadow of Paul Bunyan is an experimental first person documentary about colonial heritage, mythmaking in northern Minnesota, the US/Dakota war of 1862 and a certain iconic pair of roadside attractions in Bemidji, Minnesota. The film explores the way the Anglo-American caricature of Paul Bunyan overshadows the many complex histories of this state. Using rarely seen archival materials and observational 16mm film, In the Shadow of Paul Bunyan is an expedition into the hidden corners of this land we call Minnesota."

The Grand Terrace Photo League is the product of an eight-week photo ethnography project at the Grand Terrace apartment complex in Worthington, Minnesota. Made in collaboration with its residents, documentary storyteller Nik Nerburn (In the Shadow of Paul Bunyan) explores the lives and stories of apartment residents through essays, portraits, youth-made images, and family photographs from residents’ personal collections.

"Grand Terrace, which houses working families speaking seven different languages, reflects the changing demographics of our country in miniature. In the face of escalating toxic language directed at new immigrants and those of us who welcome them, it’s important that we work to tell compassionate, collaborative stories about our new homes and neighbors." - Nik Nerburn
