Nik Nerburn decolonizes the Paul Bunyan folk myth, connects it to the violent history of Minnesota, and provides possible counter histories. A fascinating and playful forty-minute long experimental documentary.

"In the Shadow of Paul Bunyan is an experimental first person documentary about colonial heritage, mythmaking in northern Minnesota, the US/Dakota war of 1862 and a certain iconic pair of roadside attractions in Bemidji, Minnesota. The film explores the way the Anglo-American caricature of Paul Bunyan overshadows the many complex histories of this state. Using rarely seen archival materials and observational 16mm film, In the Shadow of Paul Bunyan is an expedition into the hidden corners of this land we call Minnesota."

Check out a clip of the film.

In this tragically beautiful short-length animated film, we’re given a week through the dream-like eyes of the moon--a depressed gentle giant whose few friends include a pack of wolves, an invisible person, and a boy on a garbage pile in space. Mailmen in hot air balloons, the architecture of teeth, whales, birds, and ghostly clouds all make appearances.

I find this film to be as heart-breaking as it is hilarious, an experience that brings a little more magic into the world. It’s a half hour that can be watched again and again.

This limited first edition DVD comes with three additional animated shorts by the creators of this film. Plus: Full creator commentary track, theatrical trailer, and behind the scenes footage. Watch the trailer.
